MY JOURNEY INTO ART
WHERE IT ALL BEGAN...
I was lucky to grow up going to a school where amazing art classes were readily available. Thus, I actually don't remember the first sculpture I made or the first time I touched clay...it was probably when I was in preschool or kindergarten.
I do remember having the opportunity to try throwing on a wheel in the 8th grade and, like so many ceramic artists before me, I fell in love with the wheel. Throughout high school, I took throwing classes with Jerry Mahle.
At the end of my senior year (2005) I wanted to try sculpture, so, for better or for worse, I went for it and I created two low-fired ceramic sculptures pictured to the right.
WHERE IT CONTINUED...
After high school, I ventured to The College of William and Mary where I completed a bachelor of science and continued to take ceramics classes with Marlene Jack. Once again, I was primarily working on the wheel; however, I did dabble in some stone and plaster sculpture.
After college, I continued to take ceramic classes with Rochelle Lum at the Honolulu Museum of Art and at the Hawaii Potter's Guild.
WHERE I AM NOW...
After working for nearly 8+ years in the field of science, ranging from non-profit work as a science educator to academic research to a state government position, I knew I needed a change. In December of 2015, I decided to lay down my life as a scientist to pursue the path to becoming a sculptor.
I recently moved to the Santa Cruz mountains where I am actively making work at home while pursuing teaching, gallery, and apprenticeship opportunities in the area.
